KERRY BLUE TERRIER
HEALTH AND GENETICS FUND
ESTABLISHED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI

The United States Kerry Blue Terrier Charitable Funds is pleased to announce the establishment of the Kerry Blue Terrier Health and Genetics Research Fund at the University of Missouri. This Fund will support the research of Dr. Johnson and Dr. O’Brien and their research teams. The fund will be directed for use in furthering research in areas of benefit to Kerry Blue Terriers. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $10,000 on behalf of this fund.

At the request of the researchers, the actual use of the funds will be based on the final sequencing work currently underway to identify the marker on the most likely gene for PNA. Once this work is complete, and the marker identified, it is anticipated the fund will support the Phenome Project. However, if further work is required to identify the PNA marker, then our funds will support that further research. The United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club Health and Genetics Committee will act as our research liaison.

The United States Kerry Blue Terrier Charitable Funds will work closely with the researchers and the AKC Canine Health Foundation, as well as other interested organizations, to strive to obtain matching money for projects such as the Phenome Project that the researchers feel will benefit the Kerry Blue Terriers.

We are excited about the work accomplished to date by Drs. Johnson and O’Brien. The USKBTC Board of Governors and Charitable Funds Board has eagerly followed their progress as this research moved forward. The Boards were most recently given a confidential briefing at the Board of Governors meeting in March, 2004. We are truly close to a breakthrough creating many opportunities for achieving breeding excellence. This work is only the beginning of genetic research will be able to contribute to our breeding programs giving us opportunities never before available.

The Charitable Funds Board urges all fanciers, whether members of the USKBTC or not, to support this important work. Tax deductible donations to this Fund are now being accepted either via of Pay Pal (Health & Genetics) from the website or mailed to Tom Rogers, Treasurer of the Charitable Funds, 4334 East Aliso Canyon, Phoenix, AZ 85044.
