I have been amazed at the overwhelming favorable response that this year's Westminster BOB winner received from the public. Since the Terrier Group judging was aired on TV, I have been deluged with e-mails and phone calls from prospective buyers--more in just three days than I normally hear from in two months! However, there is a downside. Nearly everybody who has contacted me only knows what they had heard on TV...that is, the breed is hypoallergenic, nonshedding, and "perfect for everybody!"

While it may seem to those of us who are familiar with Kerry Blue Terriers that the breed's characteristics are so obvious that there is no need to mention them, prospective buyers need to be informed that there is a downside. Believe it or not, many people equate the term non-shedding with no grooming! In addition to grooming requirements, prospective buyers should be warned/informed about the breed's reputation for dog aggression and dominance challenges, as well as its high prey drive. Again, this is something experienced Kerry breeders and owners take in stride, but that many new owners are totally unprepared for and unable to deal with. Having worked as a rescue coordinator and volunteer, these stories are all too familiar to me.

Breeders work hard to produce quality Kerries and deserve owners who they can rest assured will give those puppies a lifetime of excellent care. Prospective buyers deserve to know what they can expect as far as grooming and training requirements and behavior before they invest their time, money, and love in a puppy that they are then unwilling or unable to deal with as it matures. And the dogs certainly deserve owners who know what to expect and are fully prepared and committed to provide the necessary care and training and loving them for what they are.
