How Much Does A Kerry Puppy Cost?

Copyrighted Susan Dunivant

There are several factors one must consider when considering the price of a Kerry Blue Terrier. The area of the country or world from which one may plan to purchase a puppy, the quality of the animal, and whether it is to be a companion only (pet) or show dog (companion as well, hopefully) may be factors in determining cost.

Many times an older show quality puppy may sell for a higher price as it has matured somewhat and variables such as correct bite, ear placement, and coat may then be known qualities, therefore greatly affecting value for show or breeding purposes. These older puppies may also have been successfully exhibited with points toward championship, therefore proving their exhibition quality. However, another practice some breeders choose to follow is that of selling both pet and show prospects at the same price. Another variation is co-ownership contracts, "show to championship" deals, along with other special agreements, all which may affect price. An important decision for the prospective puppy buyer is to decide whether he or she wants to exhibit the dog, with perhaps the requirement of taking on the responsibility of breeding a litter. If these responsibilities aren't attractive, then by no means enter into an agreement which may require that you do either. Simply specify the desire for a companion pet only. Do not be pressured into "thinking about" showing, thereby entering into an agreement with the breeder which very likely will lead to future unhappiness for both parties.

Occasionally, older dogs may be available at a very nominal fee should the breeder feel the animal is going to an ideal situation. In the author's observation Kerry Blues may sell at a higher price in more metropolitan areas of the country, and like many other purchases, prices may be higher on the West Coast.

Obviously, more critical than monetary consideration is the importance of determining whether the Kerry Blue Terrier is the right choice for one's family and lifestyle. The initial cost of a puppy will be small in comparison to the expenditure of care in the form of providing training, food and shelter along with regular health care for the duration of a dog's life. But rest assured, this amazing breed will pay back the investment many times over in pure love and lots of laughter!

Finally, if one might be inclined as a prospective first time buyer to exclaim in surprise over the fair but perhaps higher price of a well-bred Kerry Blue Terrier perhaps the following quote will provide some wisdom...
"There is hardly anything in the world that someone can't make a little worse and sell a little cheaper - and people who consider price alone are this man's lawful prey."
John Ruskin, 1819-1900
