Kerry Blue Terrier Performance Newsletter

We are having a wonderful spring here in Rochester, NY. It is wonderful be outside again, training in the fresh air. We’re concentrating on tracking this spring with lots of mini-clinics. Then, the first weekend in June, we will be taking a TDX (Tracking Dog Excellent) seminar. I’ll post my thoughts on it later after I attend.
Jessie loves the tracking, although keeping his motivation for longer tracks is the challenge. He starts out strong, then eventually falters and looks back at me as if to say, “Why are we doing this?” With encouragement, he will continue, but there is much work to be done. I’m increasing his motivation by making his jackpot at the end a real bunny fur purse filled with real steak. He gets to eat the steak and then tug with the purse. It seems to be helping answer the “Why?” question for now.
I just got back from an agility trial tonight. It is the first outdoor trial of the season in this part of the country. Eve Fishell was there with Tonka and Tide putting in admiral performances, as usual. It is fun to go to a trial and have two other kerries compete, particularly when they are such wonderful agility dogs.

Hi Jane, A while ago you asked for information on the Uskb-list about Kerries who had earned titles in the new FAST class. Well, this weekend my Riley qualified in both his FAST runs at the Agility Club of Central Wyoming's trial in Casper and earned his Novice FAST title.

This weekend, we had a wonderful time in Agility and Rally competitions in Wichita. Our biggest thrill for the weekend was seeing our 11.5 year old girl, Corky, finish her Rally Novice (RN) title Corky knew she had done well, and we have never seen the old girl's eyes gleam as brightly as they did on Friday and Saturday after her qualifying runs. At her first Rally trial a couple of weeks ago, Corky performed the exercises flawlessly, but we could tell she was not fully confident in this new competitive situation. Apparently, Corky has decided this type of competition is a blast though, because her eyes were afire, and she sported a grin that stretched from ear to ear
Corky was our first Kerry, bought as a pet in 1995. At the urging of her breeder, Diane Stroud, we got our feet wet in Conformation while Corky was still a puppy. In the years that followed, we broadened the scope of our activities to include companion dog events. We are very proud that Corky, hereafter known as DiCher Devil In A Blue Dress RN, a girl who always preferred backstage to the limelight of competition, has carved a little place for her name in competitive dog events. We will always be grateful to Diane for entrusting Corky to our care.
Also, Daisy finished her Rally Advanced (RA) title the same day Corky got her RN.
